Etymology

From earlier *jewä (whence also the variant *jivä), borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic [Term?] or otherwise from some other Indo-European language (compare Sanskrit यव (yava, “grain, cereal”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yéwos. Similar words in the other Uralic languages (such as Erzya юв (juv, “awn”), Udmurt ю (ju, “grain, cereal”)) are probably separate loans, mostly from Indo-Iranian.^[1]
