Possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pülke- / *pilke- with metathesis from *pülke- to *külpe-, in which case cognate with Komi-Zyrian пывсьыны (pyvśyny), Udmurt пыласькыны (pylaśkyny), Eastern Khanty [script needed] (pöγəl-) and Eastern Mansi [script needed] (päγl-), all having the meaning "to bathe".
