Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Samic *rëpëtēk. Possibly onomatopoeic. Words with a similar sound are also found in other languages, such as Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyp- and Hungarian reped. According to Hakulinen & Junttila (2022), possibly borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian rė́pti).[1]
