Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *wetä-. Cognate with Hungarian vezet.

Alternatively, if the Uralic form was originally *wätä-, the Finnic verb may represent a separate borrowing from Baltic (compare Lithuanian vèsti (vẽda)).[1]
