Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-ló-s, or *tétḱ-dʰlo-m, with cluster simplification, both from *tetḱ- (to cut, hew; to create). Cognate with Old Irish tál (adze), Proto-Slavic *tesla (adze).[1] See also Proto-West Germanic *þehsan (to fashion, break flax).
