Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/blōtą
Proto-Germanic
Etymology
Traditionally from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlā-d- (“to offer, sacrifice”), comparing Latin flāmen (“priest”), but this root is largely abandoned by modern scholars. Possibly from the same root as *blōþą (“blood”); compare the development of Proto-West Germanic *blōdisōn (“to mark with blood > to bless”).
