Kroonen considers the word to be from Proto-Indo-European *dʰh̥₂w-eh₁-, from a root *dʰeh₂w- (“to look at, marvel”), and compares Ancient Greek θαῦμᾰ (thaûmă, “a wonder, marvel”).[1]
