Proto-Germanic

From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰleyd-, possibly an extension of *ǵʰley- as seen in *glīwą (joy). Kroonen considers it likely the strong verb was back-formed from the iterative *glittōną (to shine).

  • IPA(key): /ˈɣliː.tɑ.nɑ̃/

*glītaną[1][2]

  1. (West Germanic) to shine, sparkle
