Disputed. Either from Proto-Indo-European *kew-, *ḱew- (“skin, cuticle, hide; beauty, splendour”) or from Proto-Indo-European *ḱyeh₁- (“grey, dark shade”), or a merger of the two. Compare Sanskrit छवि (chavi, “skin, beauty”).
