Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *km̥H-néh₂-ti, probably onomatopoeic from a root *kemH- (to hum). Cognate with Lithuanian ki̇̀mti (wheeze, become hoarse), kimùs (hoarse), Proto-Slavic *čьmèľь (bumblebee), *komãrъ (mosquito).
