From Proto-Indo-European *krh₃-yo-m, from *kerh₃- (“to burn”), whence also Lithuanian kùrti (“to kindle”), Latin carbo (“coal”). See also Proto-West Germanic *harstijan (“to roast”) and Proto-West Germanic *herþ (“hearth”).[1]
