Etymology
A Germanic root with many similarly-formed descendants and related variants. Kroonen leaves the origin open,[1] while others have derived the root from a Proto-Indo-European *reyk- (“to tear, scratch; streak”), which appears to be part of a large complex of ambiguously-resolved words that includes Sanskrit लिखति (likhati, “to scratch, write”); see there for more.[2]
