From *stahlaz, *stahalaz (firm, fast), from Proto-Indo-European *stek- (to be firm, stand fast). Cognate with Old Prussian pannu-staclan (fire-striker); an additional connection to Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬑𐬭𐬀 (staxra, strong) is tenuous.[1]
