Etymology

From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əpat, from Proto-Austronesian *Səpat. The nasal insertion after the schwa and before the voiceless plosive was regular, compare *hənti (to stop, end) (from *qəti) and *kəntut (to fart) (from *qətut).
