About the origin of the word exist two theories:
- Borrowed from Turkic, compare Tatar чәшке (çäşke) and Bashkir шәшке (şəşke).
- Borrowed from Baltic, compare Lithuanian šeškas (“polecat”) and Latvian sesks (“ferret”).
