This Proto-Naish entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Naish

Etymology

A compound with *Cbak (“pig”). The second element's origin is unclear:

  • It may be cognate to Tibetan ཕྲུག (phrug, “child, young one”).
  • However, Li changed his mind on the Tibetan cognate and instead compares Tibetan བུ (bu, “son, child”). This change of comparison is also bolstered by the presence of Shixing [Term?] (/⁠bʉ⁵⁵⁠/). The rhotic vowel in Naxi would have to be explained by assimilation to the first vowel of the "pig" element (on that see below).

The first vowel of the compound shows irregular reflexes in non-Malimasa varieties, instead having the reflexes of possibly *-aɣ instead of *-ak in Naxi and Na. This may be attributed to some sort of lenition of the velar coda.
