Compound of *Sni (“person”) + *maɣ (“corpse”); this second element is compared by Jacques & Michaud to Tangut 𘔲 (*mji̱j¹, “corpse”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *maŋ (“to go away, die; corpse”).
