Reconstruction notes
- *buho. It is unclear why Starostin and Nikolaev reconstruct the final vowel *-o. Because it doesn't explain all the descendant forms.
- *buhu. With uncertainty, the diphthong in the Bats is a contamination with *busja (“night”). However, the development of the Ingush form remains unexplained.
- *bohu. Rejection of the reconstructed phoneme *f leads to the reconstruction of *wH or *Hw (compare with *wHaartadu and *wHoʔ). The combination *hu at the end of a wordform could possibly have had the same qualities as *wH ~ *Hw. In Bats, the diphthong developed initially from *o-u, which is regular. Whereas in Ingush the final *u did not affect the initial *o (compare with *boxḳu), and the combination *hu, changed to в (v) at the end of the wordform, whereas at the beginning *wH ~ *Hw develop into ф (f) (compare with коартол (koartol), where the Russian ф (f) in a non-initial position behaved the same way as the Kumyk в (w) in тоатол (toatol), боалоз (boaloz)). The development of the Chechen form remains problematic, since the Cheberloi dialect has the form бухӏу (buhu), which cannot be developed from *o-u. Therefore, it is possible that this is a loan from the Andic languages (сompare with Andi бугьу (buhu)). Keep in mind also *maskul (“turkey”).
