Reconstruction:Proto-Nakh/mełaᶰ
Proto-Nakh
Etymology
(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.). By surface analysis, *meł + *-aᶰ.
Reconstruction notes
The entire verb paradigm was aligned with the recent past tense after regressive assimilation. Then there was a repeated regressive assimilation:
- *ме̄ла (meela) ~ *ме̄ли (meeli) ~ *ме̄лур (meelur) >
- *ме̄ла (meela) ~ мийли (miı̇li) ~ *мо̄ьлур (möölur) >
- мийла (miı̇la) ~ мийли (miı̇li) ~ *мийлур (miı̇lur) >
- мийла (miı̇la) ~ мийли (miı̇li) ~ муьйлур (müülur).
However, Starostin and Nikolaev suggest an additional reconstruction *mebłaᶰ for Chechen.
