Unknown. Proposed relations include:

Lule Sami iestev (“female bear”).
Finnish oksi (“bear”) and Erzya овто (ovto, “bear”).
Western Mansi ош (oš, “sheep”), from a Uralic term denoting wool or hair.
Finnish ukko (“old man”), used instead of a native term for a bear due to a taboo.
