Reconstruction:Proto-Permic/ɔš
Proto-Permic
Reconstruction notes
- Reconstructed based on the assumption that this term goes back to some Uralic root or other.
Etymology
Unknown. Proposed relations include:
- Lule Sami iestev (“female bear”).
- Finnish oksi (“bear”) and Erzya овто (ovto, “bear”).
- Western Mansi ош (oš, “sheep”), from a Uralic term denoting wool or hair.
- Finnish ukko (“old man”), used instead of a native term for a bear due to a taboo.
