    From Proto-Afroasiatic *ʔab-, ultimately an onomatopoeic nursery word. Cognate with Egyptian ꜣbwt, Proto-Berber *ʔabb, Hausa ùbā, Somali aabo, Afar abba.

    The final consonant of the stem is inferred based on construct forms, but Kogan reconstructs this item as *ʔab- instead.
