From Proto-Afroasiatic *gad- (“young male bovid”). Cognate with Proto-Cushitic *gad- and Proto-Chadic *gad-.
Unrelated to Proto-Berber *e-ɣăyd- (“he-goat”), from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḳid-/*ḳad- (whence Proto-Semitic *naḳad- and Proto-Omotic *ḳid-).
