From Proto-Afroasiatic *mariy- (wild cat, lion, leopard). Cognate with Egyptian mꜣj (lion) and mjw (cat), Alagwa mariy-amo (wild cat), Pévé merian (wild cat, serval), Ngete mēr (serval).
