Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *kwjak (Coblin, 1986); *kʷak (Hill, 2019)

Isolated to Chinese and Tibetan. No Tibeto-Burman lemma is given in STEDT. The initial dorsal stop is of uncertain position; Baxter and Sagart think this word had a uvular initial in Old Chinese, while others believe it had a velar one. This uncertainty does not affect the comparison to Tibetan, since Tibetan merges uvulars with velars.

Verb

*kʷak

  1. to seize, take away
