Proto-Sino-Tibetan
Reconstruction
- Proto-Sino-Tibetan:
- Proto-Tibeto-Burman: *ʔəw-ŋ (STEDT)
The initial consonant is ambiguous between *q and *ʔ from Chinese and Lolo-Burmese alone.
The rGyalrongic words meaning "bowl" have not yet been assigned to a root by scholars, but given the semantics of Chinese 甌 / 瓯 (ōu) that is still compared to the Lolo-Burmese word, the rGyalrongic roots probably belong here; if this is correct, the rGyalrongic reflexes would settle the initial as *q-.
