Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *ʔik (Coblin, 1986); *qik (Hill, 2019)
    • Proto-Tibeto-Burman:
      • *ik (Benedict, 1972)
      • *ʔik (Matisoff, 2003; STEDT)

Hill assigns Tibetan འཁྱིག ('khyig, to bind; suffocate) here while STEDT assigns it to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(g/k)(y)i(t/k) (to tie, bind). The Tibetan word may be a conflation of the two verbs.

Verb

*qik

  1. to squeeze
  2. to strangle, suffocate
