From early *ēdsā, inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ēˀdsāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed-s-eh₂, from *h₁ed- (“to eat”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *ēsą (“food, carrion”) < *h₁ed-s-om, Tocharian B: yetse (“skin”) < *h₁ed-s-os. Compare Lithuanian ė̃desis (“feed”) < *h₁ed-es-.
