Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/šipъ
Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Uncertain. Equivalent to *šiti (“to sew”) + *-pъ, hence, a possible derivative of Proto-Indo-European *syuh₁- (“to sew”). Alternatively, related to Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšwipáti (“to cast off, to fling”) and Proto-Germanic *swaipaną (“to sweep”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ksweybʰ-.
