Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Substantivized form of the adjective *žeravъ (“scorching, burning”) + *-a. Some descendants have epenthetic -j-, probably by analogy with Proto-Slavic *žařavъ, *žařavica (“scorching heat, hearth”), from Proto-Slavic *žařati (“to burn down”).[1]
