Etymology

Of onomatopoeic origin, from duplication of the root of *bъmъ, *brьmъ (“buzz, hum”) +‎ *-arъ. Cognate with Lithuanian bam̃balas (“bumblebee, cockchafer”), Latvian bam̃bals (“beetle”) and further comparable with Sanskrit बम्भरः (bambharaḥ, “bee”), Ancient Greek βομβυλιός (bombuliós, “bumblebee”).
