Etymology

*kolo (“wheel, circle”) +‎ *-ačь, presumably due to its rounded shape.

The similarity to Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (kwlʾck' /⁠kulāčag⁠/, “small, round bun”) (Modern (koluče)) and Ancient Greek κόλλιξ (kóllix, “roll or loaf of bread”) may be coincidental as it is difficult to explain through usual models of inheritance and borrowing.
