From *krekati +‎ *-etъ. Further, perhaps of imitative Proto-Indo-European origin (see Ancient Greek κρέξ (kréx, corncrake)).[1] Compare Ancient Greek κέρκνος (kérknos, a Hierax or an Alektryon).
