Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kā́ˀupas m, from Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂wp-os, from *keh₂wp- (“heap”). Cognate with Lithuanian kaũpas, káupas (“heap”), Proto-Germanic *haupaz.[1]
