Possibly from a Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *eker (hunting dog). Compare Southern Altai (Teleut dialect) [script needed] (eŋer, hunting dog), Chuvash акар (ak̬ar, greyhound) and Ossetian егар (egar, greyhound), also from Turkic.
