Cognate with Latvian puõsms (link), formally reflecting Proto-Balto-Slavic *pṓˀsma. Endzelīns considers it a Balto-Slavic innovation.

Further origin is unclear. Has been compared with:

Neither of these theories explains the acute in Balto-Slavic.
