Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *staiˀnā́ˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *steyh₂- (to stiffen).[1]

Cognate with Proto-West Germanic *stain (stone), Ancient Greek στῖον (stîon, pebble) and Sanskrit स्त्यायते (styāyate, hardens, solidifies).
