Etymology

Related to Proto-Slavic *strьžę̃ ~ *strь̏žьnь (core, nucleus). Possibly cognate with Swedish streke (cental flux), from Proto-Germanic *strikiz (streak, line).

Compare also Slovene stȍrž, stȑž (cone, pillar), seeminly from an yo-stem *strъžь.
