Proto-Uralic

Etymology

Perhaps borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *mosg-o- (to dip, sink).[1]

Reconstruction

The Mari, Permic and Hungarian descendants suggest rather *muśke-, which may potentially be due to the labializing influence of *m-. In the case of Mari, Aikio (2013) proposes that such a development near labial consonants is indeed regular: compare also e.g. *kolmes, *kopa.

Verb

*mośke-

  1. to wash
