Reconstruction:Proto-Uralic/mośke-
Proto-Uralic
Etymology
Perhaps borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *mosg-o- (“to dip, sink”).[1]
Reconstruction
The Mari, Permic and Hungarian descendants suggest rather *muśke-, which may potentially be due to the labializing influence of *m-. In the case of Mari, Aikio (2013) proposes that such a development near labial consonants is indeed regular: compare also e.g. *kolmes, *kopa.
Verb
*mośke-
- to wash
Synonyms
- *lika-
- (Western Uralic) *pese-
