The Western forms meaning 'to burn' have been earlier compared with Proto-Ugric *paĺɜ- (“to freeze”) (whence e.g. Hungarian fagy), while the Eastern forms have been treated as variants of *pala (“bit”). The connections presented here follow Aikio (2016).
