Janhunen (1977) considers Proto-Samoyedic *pəjmə- a derivative from *pi (“night”), suggesting a shorter Proto-Uralic root such as *piľe. SSA speculatively suggests a connection with *pilwe (“cloud”).

Reconstruction

Loss of expected *l in Finnic is unprecedented.
