Reconstruction:Proto-Vietic/k-cajʔ
Proto-Vietic
Etymology
Borrowed from a descendant of reconstructed Old Chinese 紙 (OC *k.teʔ) when the dental stop already palatalized. Cognate with Lakkia kʰjei²⁴ ("paper"), which was probably borrowed around the same time.
Due to the relative time depth of this item, it is suggestive that some form of literacy was present when Vietic still formed a dialect continuum. Furthermore, due to the presence of its reflexes in languages of "hunter-gatherer" groups like Rục and Arem, it is likely these groups had either not abandoned practicing agriculture for long enough for this term to become obsolete, or maintained contacts with neighbouring agricultural groups like the Sách.
Noun
*k-cajʔ
