Reconstruction:Proto-Vietic/k-ləːŋʔ
Proto-Vietic
Etymology
From Proto-Austroasiatic *pnləːŋʔ (“egg”).
Similarity to Proto-Khmuic *kʔloŋ (“egg”) (whence Puoc kloŋ and Khmu [Cuang] kdoŋ) is probably coincidental, since it involved both an irregular vowel correspondence and metathesis of the glottal stop.
In many conservative Vietic languages, this item was displaced by *t-luːrʔ (> Arem ulʊːlʔ, Thavung ตะลู้น), which is an Austronesian loan (cf. Malay telur).
