Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Germanic *hlunniz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱl̥nów-is ~ *ḱln̥w-éy-s, from *ḱl̥néwti (“to be listening”), related to *hleuþr (“noise”), *hlūd (“loud”).
