Reconstruction:Proto-West Germanic/staigrijan
Proto-West Germanic
Etymology
Possibly derived from *staigijan (“to raise”) + -r- frequentative suffix. However the weak class 1 inflection is unexpected as frequentives are normally class 2 verbs. Otherwise possibly from *staigr (“steep”) + *-jan.
