Etymology

Composed of *dej (eye) +‎ *-ç (singulative suffix).

Tentatively compared to Proto-Na-Dene *teˑ (eye) and Proto-Athabaskan *-teˑʔ, *-taˑʔ (eye), which are Vajda (2022)'s own reconstructions based on Gwichʼin and Tāłtān forms.
