From Greek Σαμοθράκη (Samothráki), from Ancient Greek Σαμοθρᾴκη (Samothrāíkē, “Samian Thrace”), from Σᾰ́μος (Sắmos, “Samos”) + Θρᾴκη (Thrāíkē, “Thrace”), from the island's early Greek colonizers and the general ancient territory in which it lay.
