From Ancient Greek σκᾰ́φη (skắphē, “bowl; spade, shovel”) + -soma (“body”, from Ancient Greek σῶμα (sôma)).
Coined by English zoologist and marine biologist (1790/1–1836) William Elford Leach in 1815.
