From Ancient Greek σκᾰ́φη (skắphē, bowl; spade, shovel) +‎ -soma (body, from Ancient Greek σῶμα (sôma)).

Coined by English zoologist and marine biologist (1790/1–1836) William Elford Leach in 1815.
