From Middle High German schæfer, schæfære, from Old High German scāfāri. Cognate with German Schäfer. By surface analysis, Schof + -er. Schéifer preserves the inherited outcome of Middle High German -æ-. Compare Scheefchen (“little sheep”) with analogical umlaut after the primary noun.
