From Ancient Greek σχῐ́σμᾰ (skhĭ́smă, “schism”) + Ancient Greek ὄμμα (ómma, “eye”), literally “split-eye(d)”.
Coined by German lichenologist Julius von Flotow and by German lichenologist Gustav Wilhelm Körber in 1852.
