From Ancient Greek σχῐ́σμᾰ (skhĭ́smă, schism) +‎ Ancient Greek ὄμμα (ómma, eye), literally split-eye(d).

Coined by German lichenologist Julius von Flotow and by German lichenologist Gustav Wilhelm Körber in 1852.
