  • (Westerkwartier) Potentially attested as seltnon in 855, attested with certainty as selwaert in 1534. Etymology uncertain. The toponym may be a compound of an ancient personal name or hydronym and Old Frisian werd (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). Compare Saultain.
  • (Groningen) First attested as selewrt in 1169. Compound of either Old Frisian sele (hall house) or Sigila (a personal name) and uurð (artificial mound for habitation). Formerly an independent hamlet.
