- (Westerkwartier) Potentially attested as seltnon in 855, attested with certainty as selwaert in 1534. Etymology uncertain. The toponym may be a compound of an ancient personal name or hydronym and Old Frisian werd (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Saultain.
- (Groningen) First attested as selewrt in 1169. Compound of either Old Frisian sele (“hall house”) or Sigila (a personal name) and uurð (“artificial mound for habitation”). Formerly an independent hamlet.
